We are home.
I suspect everyone fell rapidly asleep Monday night since we had last been in bed before our farewell Sunday sunrise safari on the Tarangire (equivalent time 9 p.m CT Saturday night).

Thank you for all your prayers for our safe and fulfilling travel. We have arrived home changed people, deeply touched and enriched.  It makes reentry hard, because home looks the same and our home world kept spinning while we were experiencing a different life.   

We became a team... danced and sang...laughed a lot...cried some...listened...asked a lot of questions... discussed perplexing issues...brainstormed solutions...made new friends...reunited with old friends...saw God in so many hands and faces.

This experience will spill over into our lives in many ways, so stay tuned. 

I am grateful for each of the diverse and very talented people who agreed to come on this trip and trusted in the process, to give of themselves and just be.  
With overwhelming gratitude to the many friends and partners in Tanzania who generously shared their knowledge and radical hospitality to make this a journey of a lifetime.

Commissioning Service of Trinity’s Mission Team

  The  countdown for the Tanzania trip is on!  The Commissioning Service at Trinity Lutheran Church this morning made the dream of my mission  trip to Tanzania become a concrete reality.  This is really going to happen!   The service calmed  my anxieties because I know that the mission team will  be enfolded in the prayers of the people of both Trinity and Mwatasi Lutheran churches. Unexpected….AGAIN!

The team, while tired and a bit weary from the adventures of yesterday, was in the lobby of the hotel at 5:15 am ready for the transportation back to the airport.  And, we even managed to get everyone in a group picture!  It was Monday morning at Dar es Salaam and the traffic was already active.  Buses, motorcycles, taxis, vans, cars and motorized carts all attempting to navigate the bumpy roads, honking horns and close calls.  The sites, sounds, smells and movement are all different.  The airport was very casual in comparison to the United States.  Once inside and after some various exchanges, there was a realization that our flight left at 4:00 pm.  As Kris mentioned yesterday, expected the unexpected!  Jim Brown (who carried his ukulele during all the flights) pulled it out to play a few songs for practice.  The entertainment value of a bunch of tired people trying to sing in a very cramped airport while waiting to figure out what to do ne...

 Expect the Unexpected We converged at the MSP airport at 4:30 a.m. for a 7:00 a.m. flight to New York for a connecting flight to Nairobi, Kenya The flight was long and my mind was flooded with musings.  What tantalizing sights and smells will tease my senses?  What experiences will challenge my world view?  How will being in another culture stretch my perceptions?  What new relationships will flourish?  How will my faith be impacted?  I expect the trip will change me and I pray that I will be open to its unfolding. When traveling one needs to expect the unexpected.   An unexpected exercise presented itself  at the Nairobi airport today.  Our plane was cancelled due to mechanical difficulty.  The mechanical problem did not surprise me  since I spotted large patches of duck tape on the wing of the plane that I had just spent over 13 hours on.   We are now waiting for 5 hours to see if there is room on the next plane going t...
